I was drafted immediately after graduation from Huntertown High School in 1943.  Was sent to Camp Hahn in Riverside, California, where I spent 10 months in the anti-aircraft.  From there we were sent to Gainesville, Texas and placed in basic training for the infantry.  We were sent overseas to England as replacements.  From there we were shipped to Omaha Beach, France.

From the time we left France, we were constantly on the move by train, truck or walking to the front lines.  I was on the front line approximately 3 weeks.  On my last encounter with the enemy I was hit by shrapnel from a German tank.  As a result, I was hospitalized and operated on in France.  Then I was shipped back to England for 2 more operations and sent home.

I was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Rhineland Campaign, Northern France Campaign, European Eastern Campaign Ribbon, 2 Bronze Campaign Stars, and the Good Conduct Medal.

I spent 6 months in the Veteran’s Hospital at Battle Creek, Michigan, and was honorably discharged in July, 1945.
