This is probably a case where Jacob and Elizabeth were counted twice. They were married in 1850 and the census was not taken until late in the year. Actually one in Perry in Dec and one in CC in Jan of 1851. But somehow they were probably counted twice. Are George and Jacob brothers? Is Margaret their mother?? We also have the 1860 census for George.

Hiram seems to disagree on each census where the parents were born. Perhaps he wasn’t always there to give the correct answer. Some confusion about Hiram and his parentage. I believe that he was the son Benjamin Hursh and Catherine Watson of Jackson Township, DeKalb Co., but the initials with his name are never the same. Does anyone know for sure?

If so he moved to Cedar Creek Township for his married life.

JOHN W. HURSH, one of the prominent teachers of Allen county, is a native of Perry township, born July 15, 1855. He is a son of JACOB and ELIZABETH HURSH. Growing to manhood on the old homestead farm, he received a good common school education and afterward attended a term at the Center seminary and at the Fort Wayne College about two years. In 1875 he began teaching in the country schools and has been so engaged since, with the exception of about 2 years. In 1880 he was united in marriage with JENNIE, daughter of GEORGE and HARRIET GUMP, and they have 4 children:

GEORGE, JOHN, DONNIE and BERTIE.

He and wife are both members of the Methodist Episcopal church. He occupies the old homestead of 200 acres, of which he owns all but one share. He is recognized as one of the worthy and valuable citizens of his township.

Purchased from the government by JOHN DELAFIELD of New York City in 1837. His wife was HARRIET W. DELAFIELD.

Feb. 11, 1840 they sold it to GEORGE W. HATCH and MARY ANN HATCH from New York City and state. It was sold through JOHN HOGUE, Attorney, perhaps HOUGH.

1849 it was sold by the Hatches to ANDREW CRAWFORD of Ashland, Ohio and his wife, RACHEL.

1849 - Then to JACOB HURSH of Allen Co., IN. He held it until his death when it went to his heirs. Jacob died in 1879.

Grandmother, ELIZABETH A. was still living and did until 1927 so she made a deal with ARVILLA in 1909. The other siblings began to sell the property to GEORGE and AUDREY (FITCH) HURSH. They received the land in 1937.

1942 he and Audrey sold the land to GUSTAVE F. TIMM and his wife, BERTHA E.

1944 the land was sold to WILLIAM D. MARTIN, JR. and his wife, OLIVE L. MARTIN

We have two or three groups of Hurshes in Perry Twp., Cedar Creek Twp., and in Jackson Twp., in DeKalb County. We can connect the Cedar Creek and DeKalb County families but need a connection yet for Jacob of Perry Township. Jacob Hursh lived on and built the Hursh Homestead Home on the Hursh Road in Perry Township. I think they are in the same family as John and Margaret below but cannot find a connecting family. John, born in 1768 and Margaret had several children, some of which came to this area of Allen and DeKalb counties, but since Jacob was born about 1824, he would probably have been a grandchild if we can connect him somewhere. A son of one of John and Margaret’s children?? Have tried to follow their movements, but find no Jacob of the correct age.

The only clue we have is that in 1850 Jacob was counted in the census twice. Once in Perry Township, and once in Cedar Creek Township. In C C Twp he seems to be living with, or next to, a probable brother George, and an older lady named Margaret, who is probably their mother. Jacob is the same age and his wife is the same age in both census reports and she is only 16. They were married in 1850 and the census seems to have been taken later in the year.
