THE BROUGHTON FAMILY
The Broughton
family will be found mainly in Noble County, but some married into
Perry
Township
families. They originated from Jefferson County, New York and came to this
area with many of the
Perry
Township families, like the Duntens, and the Parkers.
We find they were involved with this group in helping with the Underground Railroad before the Civil War times.
The following descendant outline was taken from what various information was available from many sources. It is only a suggested outline as it has not been proven to be correct. If you have more information on this family we would appreciate your connection and corrections.

Obituary of William Broughton
Obituary as found in Avilla News of July 6, 1893:
"The News is pained to learn of the death of William Broughton which occurred at Stockton, Kansas, last Saturday. He was the father of Mort and Dr. Frank Broughton, formerly of Avilla, and for many years was a prominent resident of this township. He was at one time county commissioner and held many offices of public trust, always proving faithful and efficient, and during his long residence here enjoyed the respect and esteem of a wide circle of acquaintances. He removed to Kansas about 12 years ago and has since resided there. His son Mort, left for Kansas on Monday and will bring the remains back for burial, which will probably occur at the Allen Chapel Cemetery where Mrs. Broughton is buried."
Obit #2: "William Broughton, whose death we noted last week, was born in Jefferson County, N.Y., June 29, 1822, and died very suddenly at his home near Stockton, Kansas, Saturday, July 1, 1893. He came with his father's family to Swan Township, Noble County, Indiana in 1839. The following winter he attended school in Ohio, and on his return to Swan he and his brother Samuel began brick-making.
On March 24, 1844 he was married to Miss Rebecca Cosper and to them were born 7 children. Mrs. B. died October 16, 1880, and on April 23, 1881, Mr. Broughton married her sister, Mrs. Hannah (Cosper) Shroyer. Mr. Boughton lived for many years in this township, engaged in farming, brick-making, building, lumbering, etc. He was always prominent in public affairs and held many positions of trust. His last public work here was to superintend the building of the foundations of the Noble County court house. He removed to Kansas about 8 years ago.
Mr. Broughton's remains arrived in Avilla last Friday afternoon, and after funeral services at the M.E. Church conducted by Rev. Westhafer, were laid to rest in the Avilla Cemetery beside those of his first wife."
"A noticeable event was observed at the funeral of William Broughton, which took place at Avilla on Friday. It was the attendance of Dr. and Mrs. P. C. Isbell and their complete family of 7 children consisting of 5 sons and 2 daughters, the youngest, Mrs. Anna Winans, being 40 years of age, July 9. The family is scattered in different parts of the state, but all are alive and healthy. Mr. Broughton, the deceased, married two sisters of Mrs. Isbell."

Name
may be Nancy Annabelle Timmerman..........it appears in this family genealogy
the name Zimmerman and Timmerman are exchanged in various places.
Marriage dates vary from Dec. 11, 1812 to 1814 to 1818 at Jefferson Co., NY.
Most say Dec. 11, 1812
In 1834, Amos and Nancy started moving their family westward, first to Clark
County, Ohio and then to Champaign County, Ohio. It was in Champaign County
where, shortly after the birth of his youngest child, Amos lost his life on
August 17, 1838. Despite the loss of their patron, Amos Broughton's family
continued their trek, finally settling in Swan Township, Noble County, Indiana
in the fall of 1838.
According to the book "Goodspeed's History of Noble County, the family had
little money and no food, but all went to work, receiving provisions of any kind
as pay and managed to weather the winter.
It would be nearly 30 years before Amos' widow, Nancy, would remarry which she
did to Joseph Cummings on December 6, 1864. Her second marriage would prove to
be brief when just 3 years later Cummings died. Widowed for a second time, Nancy
would live into her 80's, passing away peacefully in her sleep in 1876. She is
buried beside her daughter, Annue/Annie, at Swan Cemetery. Her obituary:
"Mrs. Nancy Cummings of Swan Township died Feb. 27th, 1876, at the advanced age
of 81 years. She was born in the state of New York and emigrated thence to Ohio,
where she lived several years, and there she buried her first husband, Mr.
Broughton. She came to Noble County in 1836, and settled in the township where
she died. She was the mother of William and Samuel Broughton, who reside among
us, and who are justly held in high esteem among their fellow citizens, and who
owe their success in life to the wise counsel of their mother, for being left
fatherless in their childhood, their training depended upon the mother.
She was the mother of 10 children, of whom 8 are living. She was a member of the
M.E. Church from early youth until her death, and when she became aware that the
time of her departure was at hand, her mind was tranquil and serene, and with
full assurance of unending bliss above, she fell asleep to wake amid the glories
of heaven."
