Martin and Rebecca Heffelfinger
Martin Heffelfinger was born on March 24, 1836, and died March 24, 1903. Martin is buried in the Cedar Chapel Cemetery in Garrett, Indiana. Martin was married four times. His daughter by his first marriage was Louella, and she married John Keeler. He had one daughter Melvina, by his second marriage to Elizabeth. Elizabeth died on November 10, 1871 at 21 years of age. Melvina married Ed Fisher. His third marriage ended in divorce. He married Rebecca Spratt in his fourth marriage and had seven children, one daughter and six boys.
Martin and Rebecca’s children were:

Rebecca Spratt, Martin’s wife, was born on October 17, 1850, and died on January 4, 1916. She is also buried in the Cedar Chapel Cemetery with Martin.
Martin’s father was Captain John Kirby Heffelfinger who was born on March 14, 1799, and died February 1858. John Kirby was the son of Phillip Heffelfinger who was from Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania. Captain John Kirby Heffelfinger came to Eel River Township from Cumberland Co. with his three brothers in the spring of 1844. His wife was Elizabeth Moler, who was born on January 3, 1803, and died on January 25, 1868. There were six children born to them.

Sarah Jane B: 1830 D: 1907 M. Samuel Diffendarfer
Elizabeth B: 1840 D. 1904 M. Dr. Woodward
M. Dave Derbyshire
Rebecca’s father, Dr. Spratt, came to this country in 1813 when he was 13 years old. He landed in New Orleans, Louisiana, and was English. He apprenticed himself out to a doctor to learn the practice of medicine. He later practiced medicine in Leo, Indiana, Allen Co.. His pestle, mortar, and dental tools remain family heirlooms.
Martin was married to his first wife from Tennessee. She died in childbirth, and he left their first daughter Louella, with a couple in Tennessee. In the meantime war was declared between the North and South. Martin wanted to come north with Louella, but these people didn’t want to let her go. One family account said that the couple was abusing her. She had scrofula and a bare spot on her head where she had been lying on her side. He went to their house with a big overcoat on, and told them that he wanted to see the little girl alone. They let him do this, and he put her under his overcoat and told her not to cry. He threw her clothes out the window, took her down the stairway, and escaped through a large woods on foot to where he had hidden a large buggy. This is where the story is confusing, because Louella remembers riding horseback. One afternoon on his journey home he hid her in the hay and told her not to cry. He gave her five biscuits and left. She lost one and cried, but never looked for it. Louella, as an adult, often wondered what he did and what would have happened if he had been captured or killed. He rode at night time because he feared of being arrested for not joining the Southern Army.
Martin’s father-in-law owned a distillery, and he worked in the distillery his father-in-law owned. When the Civil War broke out his father-in-law became angry with him because he was not for the South. Martin sympathized with the Northern cause. Getting through the lines must have been difficult with a little girl to care for. They somehow reached his mother’s home, and the little girl stayed there until her grandmother Elizabeth died, January 25, 1868. He joined the Eighty-Eighth Regiment Infantry, Company E, on August 5, 1862 with his brother Jerry. Jerry was a sergeant, and Martin a private. He served in Kentucky and Tennessee taking part in the Battles of Perryville, Ky., Stone River, Tenn., Duck River, and Chickamauga,Tenn.. On the second day of the battle, September 20, 1863, he was captured by the Confederates. He was a prisoner from that time until February 23, 1865, when he was exchanged as a prisoner of war. His granddaughter can never remember seeing him without his Union coat on.
Wissen Martin Heffelfinger, the immigrant, (great-great-grandfather to our Martin), whose name in Switzerland was originally Hafelfinger, came from Baselland, from the Amt Farnsburg; nearby was a village in 1740, in Amt Homburg called Hafelfingen.
Prof. Albert H. Gerberick, Head of German Dept., Dickenson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and likewise a descendant of Martin Heffelfinger, writes, April 4, 1938, as follows:
“There can be hardly any doubt that the Heffelfingers take their family name from the town of Hafelfingen in Switzerland. There are many places names in –ingen and –fingen in southern Germany and Switzerland. These are possessive names, and usually mark ancestral home of family.” “Hafele” is a south German diminutive of Hafner, (potter). (So the conclusion must be that “Hafelfingen” means the home of the potter—the place where pottery is made—and doubtless “The Hafelfingers” were early and well-known pottery makers, living near desirable and useful clay-pits and kilns in order to have a village named for them--(J.B.H.)
Wissen Martin Heffelfinger of Diegten, Amt Farnsburg, Canton of Basel, Switzerland, age 41 years, entered the port of Philadelphia, September 23, 1740, on the ship “Friendship”, with William Vittery as captain, and became the immigrant ancestor of the Heffelfingers in Lancaster and Cumberland Counties, Pennsylvania. With Martin the father, came five motherless children, for the wife and mother, Anna Maria Gysin, age 40, was lost at sea on the voyage over. Their children were Elisbeth, bapt. Oct. 14, 1725, Verena, bapt. July 3, 1729 (or Veronica of Phrona--), Anna, bapt. July 3, 1731, Martin, bapt. Nov. 22, 1733, and Johannes, bapt. Dec. 5, 1737.
Martin, son of Martin der Wissen, the Emigrant, was bapt. in Switzerland, Nov. 22, 1733, He married Anna Marie Wolfersberger (daughter of John Wolfersberger) by 1757 or earlier. The record from the Reformed Church Babtismal records in Schaefferstown, gives the following: Peter, son of Martin Heffelfinger and wife, born Oct. 19, 1764, John Frederick, son of Martin Heffelfinger and wife, born Nov. 4, 1766, and Jacob, son of Martin Heffelfinger and wife, born Aug. 24, 1769.
But Martin Heffelfinger is on the list of those who took the oath of allegiance before Capt. Henry Schaeffer and John Thome, Esq., during the years 1777-78. This list is made up of exclusively of those who resided in Schaefferstown, or within the present limits of Heidelberg Township. Taking the oath of allegiance would seem to qualify Martin for D.A.R. or S.A.R. ancestry. [1][1] Sometime between 1782 and 1790, Martin and his three sons, Phillip, Frederick, and John, moved from Heidelberg Twp., Lancaster Co., to Hopewell Twp., Cumberland Co., for the 1790 census.
Philip Heffelfinger was born in Heidelberg Twp., Lancaster County in August, 1757 to Martin and Anna Marie, and was named for Anna Marie’s brother Phillip. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. He married on September 25, 1781, Catherine Eicholtz of Lancaster County, born March 18, 1761. He moved by 1790 at time of the first census to Hopewell Twp., Cumberland County, buying a farm known as Sodom, because it had a tannery and two distilleries. Ten children were born to this union between 1790 and 1800, Mary, Philip Jr., Jacob, Elizabeth, Samuel, John ( from whom we are a descendant in Allen County, IN), William, Catherine, David, and Thomas. Philip Heffelfinger (father of John Kirby) of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, 1837, first served in the War of the Revolution as a fifer, from Lancaster County, in 1776 as a member of the Pennsylvania Militia. This qualifies as an ancestor for membership in the D.A. R. or S.A.R. .

Notes for Martin George Heffelfinger:
A description of Martin Heffelfinger from granddaughter Kate.
It seems that I can't remember him only in a blue uniform, no matter how soiled or patched it was. Mother's head was shaped like his. He had a big round head, sharp blue eyes that I was scared of, and high cheek bones. He was a big man, tall and broad shoulders, never worked. He had his boys who did this.
Martin joined the Eighty-eighth regiment infantry, Company E, on August 5, 1862 with his brother Jerry [Jeremiah]. Jerry was a sergeant, and Martin a private. He served in Kentucky and Tennessee, taking part in the battles of Perryville, KY; Stones River, Duck River, and Chickamauga, TN. On the second day of the battle, September 20, 1863, he was captured by the Confederates. He was a prisoner from that time until February 23, 1865, when he was exchanged as a prisoner of war. His granddaughter does not remember ever seeing him without his Union coat on.
